I Came to Dehradun for a Weekend. Two Years Later, I’m Still Here.

Some places are planned.

Some places just happen to you.

For me, Dehradun was supposed to be the second kind.

Almost two years ago, I came to Dehradun from Gurgaon with a few friends. The plan was simple take a break from the usual routine, spend some time around the hills, enjoy the weather, eat good food and head back to Gurgaon.

At least, that’s what I thought.

I had spent years living around the fast-paced rhythm of Gurgaon. Deadlines, meetings, traffic, screens, calls everything moved quickly. As a software developer, I was used to it.

But Dehradun felt different.

Not dramatically different.

Just… calmer.

The mornings felt slower. The air felt fresher. There was greenery around. And somewhere between exploring the city, driving towards the hills and sitting with friends

over long conversations, I started asking myself a question I never expected to ask:

“What if I actually lived here?” The Weekend That Changed My Perspective

When you live in Gurgaon, you get used to convenience.

Everything is nearby. Offices, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, cafes you name it.

But over time, you also start looking for something else.

Space.

Peace.

Greenery.

A better balance between work and life.

That was probably what attracted me most about Dehradun.

I could imagine starting my morning without immediately hearing traffic outside the window. I could imagine working on my laptop while looking at greenery instead of another building.

I could imagine evenings where going for a walk was actually something to look forward to.

But liking a city during a short trip and actually living there are two completely different things.

So I didn’t make any quick decisions.

I returned to Gurgaon.

But Dehradun stayed somewhere in the back of my mind.

Then I Started Looking at Dehradun Differently After returning to Gurgaon, I began researching Dehradun more seriously.

Not as a tourist.

As someone who might actually live there.

I started looking at different areas, connectivity, lifestyle, residential developments and, eventually, properties.

That’s when I came across River Valley Township.

Initially, I wasn’t looking for a luxury township.

I was simply trying to understand what kind of home would make sense if I decided to move.

But River Valley caught my attention because it wasn’t designed like just another residential project.

It felt more like a community.

The idea of having your home surrounded by greenery, open spaces and lifestyle amenities sounded very different from what I was used to in Gurgaon.

I visited the township.

And that visit changed the conversation in my head from:

“Could I live in Dehradun?”

to

“Why shouldn’t I?” What Made River Valley Feel Different?

For me, the biggest attraction wasn’t one particular feature.

It was the overall lifestyle.

When you work in technology, your professional life can become extremely screen-heavy. You can spend hours sitting in front of a laptop without realizing how much of the day has passed.

So having spaces where you can step away from work actually matters.

At River Valley, there are spaces for different moods and different parts of the day.

There are 50+ amenities and smart features designed around everyday living, fitness, recreation and community life.

You have spaces to stay active, unwind, spend time with friends and simply enjoy being outdoors.

There’s something satisfying about finishing work and knowing you don’t necessarily have to get into your car and drive somewhere to enjoy your evening.

You can simply step outside.

  • Go for a walk.

  • Spend time outdoors.

  • Meet people.

  • Play.

  • Relax.

  • Or just sit quietly for a while.

And honestly, I’ve come to value that more than I expected.

The Part I Didn’t Expect: Working From Dehradun

One of my biggest concerns before moving was work.

Could I actually continue my professional life from Dehradun?

The answer turned out to be yes.

As a software developer, much of my work happens online anyway. Meetings, coding, project discussions and calls can happen from almost anywhere with the right setup.

And this is where living in a place like River Valley made a difference.

I could have my focused work hours and then step away from the laptop.

That separation is something I didn’t realize I was missing.

In Gurgaon, it was easy for work to become the environment.

Here, work is just one part of the day.

And after spending almost two years here, I think that is one of the biggest lifestyle changes I’ve experienced.

Dehradun Has Become Home

The funny thing about moving to a new city is that you initially notice the big things.

The weather.

The mountains.

The greenery.

The food.

The slower pace.

But eventually, it’s the little things that make a place feel like home.

Knowing your favourite route.

Recognising familiar faces.

Having a preferred café.

Going for an evening walk without thinking about where to park.

Calling a friend and saying, “Come over.”

Watching the sky change in the evening.

These small moments gradually become your life.

And somewhere along the way, I stopped telling people that I had moved to Dehradun.

I simply started saying:

“I live in Dehradun.”

Is Dehradun the Right Place to Buy a Home?

I think that depends on what you are looking for.

If your priority is living in the middle of a constantly moving metropolitan environment, Gurgaon has its own advantages.

But if you’re looking for a lifestyle that combines modern living with greenery, space and a calmer environment, Dehradun deserves serious consideration.

I’ve also noticed more people around me asking questions like:

Where should I buy a home in Dehradun?

Which areas are developing?

What kind of lifestyle can I expect?

Is it better to buy an apartment or invest in a township?

There isn’t one answer for everyone.

But if you are planning to buy flats in Dehradun, I would suggest visiting the city before making a decision.

Don’t just look at brochures.

Come here.

Drive around.

Explore the neighbourhood.

Spend a couple of days.

And most importantly, imagine your ordinary Tuesday here not your holiday Sunday.

Because a home isn’t about how beautiful it looks during a visit.

It’s about how it feels when you live there every day.

Almost Two Years Later…

I originally came to Dehradun with friends for a short break.

I came from Gurgaon thinking about a weekend.

I ended up finding a city I could imagine calling home.

And after almost two years of living here, I can honestly say that I’m still enjoying the decision.

River Valley became an important part of that journey.

Not because it promised a completely different life overnight.

But because it gave me an environment where the life I wanted started feeling possible.

A home with modern amenities.

A community around me.

Green surroundings.

Spaces to stay active.

Places to unwind.

And, perhaps most importantly, a little more breathing room in everyday life.

Sometimes you don’t realise how much you need a change until you experience it.

For me, Gurgaon was where my career grew.

Dehradun became the place where I learned to enjoy the life around it.

And if someone now asks me whether I would consider moving back?

I usually smile and say:

“Ask me again after another two years.”

Because right now, I’m not planning to go anywhere.
